How Often Should You Groom Your Dog?

One of the questions we hear all the time is, “How often should I bring my dog in for grooming?”

The honest answer? It depends on your dog.

Their breed, coat, lifestyle, and how much brushing they get at home all make a difference. For many dogs, every 4–8 weeks is a good starting point. Dogs with curly or longer coats may need to come in a little more often.

Does Coat Type Matter?

Definitely.

Poodles, Doodles, Bichons, Shih Tzus, and other curly or longer-coated dogs can get tangled and matted pretty quickly. Regular brushing at home and grooming every 4–6 weeks can help keep their coats comfortable and manageable.

Short-haired dogs don't need haircuts, but they still benefit from regular baths, brushing, nail care, and a good coat check.

What Can You Do at Home?

You don't have to do anything complicated. Just:

Give your dog regular brush-outs

Check behind the ears and around the legs for tangles

Keep an eye on their nails

Check their skin for anything unusual

Give them a quick check after they've been playing outside

A little maintenance between appointments can make a big difference.

So, When Is It Time for a Groom?

If you're struggling to brush through your dog's coat, noticing mats, or your pup is looking a little more "ruff" than usual, it may be time.

And don't worry if you're not sure. Every dog is different, and there's no perfect grooming schedule that works for everyone.

At Fabulous Fur, we’re always happy to help you figure out what works best for your pet. After all, keeping them comfortable and happy is what grooming is really about.
